With all the rushing around during the holidays, and family members running in different directions, this time of year can be very stressful. That’s why it is so important to slow down and take time to enjoy this wonderful season, and even in the middle of our busy schedules it is possible to have a more peaceful holiday season.
Here are just a few simple ideas:
Bring Nature Indoors
There’s just something about nature, with the aromas of pine and spruce, that calms the spirit, and the holidays are an ideal time to decorate your home with nature’s bounty. Since evergreens can be found just about everywhere this time of year – including right in front of your local grocery store – you can use fresh, fragrant branches on your mantel, windowsills, kitchen counters and tabletops, even bathrooms – wherever you have the space. Not only will you be enjoying the wonderful scents of the season every time you walk into the room, but the rich evergreen colors will add amazing beauty to your home. And don’t forget the aromatic candles! With such a huge selection of fragrant candles to choose from, and in every price range, you’re sure to find one you’ll love. Another way to fill your home with festive holiday scents is to keep a pot of fragrant herbs and greenery simmering on the stove. The cozy, fresh aromas will fill your home with holiday cheer, and if you are looking for an easy and affordable homemade gift idea for family and friends, check out these wonderful recipes from Garden Therapy.
With the temperatures dropping, it’s the perfect time to spend more evenings at home with loved ones. It may sound old-fashioned, but every winter I bring out the jigsaw puzzles. One by one, everyone starts gravitating to the “puzzle table,” kids and grown-ups alike! Sitting down to a winter-themed puzzle while listening to Christmas music can be very peaceful, and the great thing is, you don’t even need a designated table – your dining room or kitchen table will do just fine with this clever roll-up felt puzzle mat that keeps your unfinished puzzle intact between sittings.
Sounds of the Season
One tradition we enjoy during the season is to play holiday music in the background, whether we are decorating the tree, baking goodies, playing a game or simply having dinner. Listening to music instead of TV background noise has a way of calming the spirit, and also invites good old-fashioned conversation. And we all know that this time of year can be very hectic, between shopping and baking and decorating – oh, my! So put on your favorite holiday CD or playlist, and sit back and enjoy. To get you started, here is just one of many classic Christmas playlists available for hours of holiday enjoyment.
This season, may we all slow down and take time to truly enjoy the holidays with family and friends. Wishing you a merry, bright and more peaceful holiday season!
